Major Virtual Seminar Pushes Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Resilience
A major virtual seminar on nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and resilience was held on 24 and 25 March 2021, hosted by the British Embassy in Costa Rica and the Forever Costa Rica Association. The event, attended by over 600 individuals from more than 30 countries, featured presentations from climate change experts including Lord Zac Goldsmith and Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta. It was inaugurated by Anne-Marie Trevelyan, UK International Champion on Adaptation and Resilience, and Andrea Meza, Minister of the Environment and Energy of Costa Rica.
The seminar aimed to drive action and alignment on nature and adaptation ahead of COP26 in Glasgow. Lord Goldsmith announced a significant increase in UK International Climate Finance to £11.6 billion, with at least £3 billion earmarked for nature protection and restoration over the next five years. Anne-Marie Trevelyan emphasized the UK's focus on nature, adaptation, and resilience for COP26 and welcomed Costa Rica's membership in the Adaptation Action Coalition. Discussions highlighted the importance of placing nature at the center of national climate change policies and the need for a more inclusive approach to adaptation and resilience strategies. Financing for nature-based solutions was identified as a priority issue.
The seminar, attended by participants from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa, encouraged countries to sign up to the Leaders' Pledge for Nature, the High Ambition Coalition, and the Adaptation Action Coalition. The event underscored the UK's commitment to doubling its climate finance and prioritizing nature-based solutions, setting the stage for further discussions and actions ahead of COP26.
