Monferrato Trek grows from local ride to a cultural weekend celebration
What began as a friendly horseback ride among locals has grown into the main event. The Monferrato Trek, now in its third year, attracts riders from across the regions to explore scenic trails, local food, and wine. Organisers have expanded the ride to a full weekend after seeing a surge in interest.
The first edition took place in 2024 with just 20 rider-horse pairs and covered 20 kilometres, finishing at the Bispeder Farmhouse. The relaxed outing soon gained attention.
By 2025, participation had jumped to 90 rider-horse pairs in a single day. The route included the Sacro Monte di Crea, one of Monferrato's most picturesque spots. There, the local parish priest blessed the participants before they continued.
The event now stretches over a weekend to accommodate more riders. It starts in Moncalvo, Italy's smallest city, and winds through vineyards and rolling hills. Twelve local wineries provided food and refreshments for the 2025 edition, adding to the experience.
The third Monferrato Trek will run from May 1–3, 2026. Riders will set off from Grana Monferrato, welcomed by the Pro Loco association. The event continues to highlight the region's landscapes, cuisine, and wines while fostering a growing community of horse lovers.
The Monferrato Trek has evolved from a small gathering into a well-attended celebration of the region's culture and countryside. With each edition, more riders, wineries, and local groups take part. The 2026 event will again showcase Monferrato's trails, food, and traditions over a full weekend.
