Most Canadians intend to vacation within the country this upcoming summer, according to a poll
In a welcome boost for small businesses across Canada, a recent survey conducted by the TD Bank Group, titled "The Harris Poll Canada," has revealed a significant interest among Canadians in supporting local businesses during their summer travels.
Julia Kelly, vice president of small business banking at TD, expressed her delight, stating that the findings were "particularly welcome news" as many small business customers have been concerned about consumer spending slowing down.
The survey, which was conducted in May among 1,531 adults, revealed that 89% of Canadians feel it's important to support small businesses this summer. This sentiment is particularly strong in Atlantic Canada, where 96% of respondents expressed a desire to support local businesses.
Mark Smith, co-owner of Made in the Maritimes in Halifax, reported a 20% increase in sales compared to previous years, attributing the growth to local support for his business.
The survey highlighted a trend towards unique experiences. Nearly three-quarters (73%) of Canadians consider traveling to visit unique businesses or attractions they have researched beforehand. Canadians also plan to research and support local eateries and shops as part of their vacation plans.
Younger Canadians, such as Gen Z and Millennials, are particularly interested in visiting cottage country and supporting local establishments like marinas in those areas. Trips to cottage country are on the rise, with 46% of Gen Z and 42% of Millennials planning to visit this summer.
The survey also revealed that 64% of Canadians will research shops, restaurants, and attractions at their destinations before going there. This proactive approach suggests a commitment to making informed choices and supporting local businesses.
Lorn Sheehan, professor of strategy and tourism at Dalhousie University, emphasised the potential economic benefits of keeping travel money within Canada. He suggested that the influx of money could bring billions of dollars to the Canadian economy.
