Network Rail's £300m Filton Bank Project Boosts Bristol Rail Services

Network Rail's Filton Bank Four Track project, a major modernization of the Great Western route, has been making waves since its inception. This £300m project, set to be completed by 2024, has significantly improved rail services in the Bristol area and beyond.

The project, which won the 'Project over £3m re-engineered' category at the ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards 2019, has removed a significant bottleneck in the national rail network. By increasing tracks from two to four, it has enhanced capacity for future intercity and suburban train services, including two new trains per hour between London and Bristol.

The project's benefits extend beyond Bristol. It has unlocked potential for the wider network and delivered new Intercity Express Programme. Since commissioning, the average public performance measure has improved from 80% to 92%. The additional tracks allow faster intercity trains to be split from suburban passenger services, improving journey times on national CrossCountry trains by up to five minutes.

Spanning 6km through Bristol city centre, the project has been mindful of its impact on residents and stakeholders. With circa 9000 residents within 250m and interfaces with major public highways, the project team minimized disruption through effective communication. They used social media, news channels, and collaborated with Great Western Railway and Bristol City Council. The two new tracks also serve as a diversionary route during maintenance and perturbations, reducing disruption for passengers.

The Filton Bank Four Track project, a flagship modernization of the Great Western route, has successfully enhanced rail services and reduced disruption. With improved journey times and increased capacity, it continues to benefit passengers and the wider network. Despite the lack of public information about the project's leadership, its impact on the rail network is undeniable.
