New Doc 'Seeds of Tradition' Explores Baduy People's Blend of Heritage and Adaptation

A new documentary, 'Seeds of Tradition', offers a glimpse into the daily lives and cultural preservation efforts of the Baduy people in West Java, Indonesia. The film, directed by A.B. Rodhial Falah, explores the unique blend of heritage and outside influences in the Baduy people's weaving patterns and their traditional farming practices that ensure food security.

The Baduy people, known for their traditional way of life, maintain a balance between preserving their heritage and adapting to external influences. Their weaving patterns, for instance, reflect this blend, showcasing a rich tapestry of cultural heritage and outside influences.

Baduy women play a crucial role in preserving these traditions while also working equally with men in agriculture. Rice, sacred to the Baduy people, is not sold but stored in traditional granaries called leuit, ensuring self-sufficiency and respect for their cultural beliefs.

The documentary captures the Baduy people's daily lives, from agriculture to weaving, highlighting their traditional farming practices that maintain food security. Baduy children learn these skills from their parents, as formal education is absent in their community. The film is a project led by Fransiskus Tarmedi and Marion Regina Mueller, with the concept developed by A.B. Rodhial Falah, Tarmedi, and Mueller. It is licensed under Creative Commons and is part of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Southeast Asia series on #RegionalDialogue.
