Nizhny Novgorod unites cultures in vibrant Nowruz and Eid al-Fitr festival
A vibrant multicultural festival celebrating Nowruz and Eid al-Fitr took place in Nizhny Novgorod this week. The event, titled Breath of Spring: The Culture of Nowruz, was organised by Minin University and drew over 200 attendees, including students, faculty, and representatives from various ethnic communities. Regional officials highlighted the gathering as a key moment for cultural exchange and cooperation.
The festival featured a mix of activities designed to showcase traditions from different cultures. Guests participated in decorative painting workshops, joined traditional games, and enjoyed a live concert. The celebrations also included speeches emphasising unity and shared values.
Olga Guseva, the regional minister for international and interregional relations, stressed the importance of such events in building neighbourly connections. She noted that eight countries—Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, South Korea, and Japan—were identified as strategic partners for Nizhny Novgorod in trade, industry, education, and culture.
Victor Sdobnyakov, rector of Minin University, remarked on the rare alignment of Nowruz and Eid al-Fitr in 2026, calling it a symbolic moment. The event closed with a ceremony where certificates of appreciation and commemorative gifts were presented to participants and organisers.
The festival reinforced cultural ties between Nizhny Novgorod and its international partners. With over 200 attendees and a focus on shared traditions, the event set a foundation for future collaborations in education, trade, and cultural exchange. Organisers plan to build on this year's success in the lead-up to 2026.
