Pilgrims Trace Apostle Paul’s Footsteps Through Crete’s Sacred Landscapes
A group of pilgrims from the Kaufbeuren parish community recently travelled to Crete under the guidance of Father Bernhard Waltner. The journey, organized with support from the Kolping movement, blended faith, history, and fellowship across the ancient civilizations of the island.
The pilgrims explored sacred sites, ancient ruins, and scenic landscapes during their stay.
The trip began with the group settling into two base locations: Heraklion in the north and Matala in the south. From there, they followed the path of the Apostle Paul and his companion Titus, retracing their missionary steps through Crete.
Worship services took place in unusual settings, including an olive grove and the grounds of Orthodox churches. The pilgrims also met with a local olive tree farmer and hiked along rugged trails above the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, deepening their connection to the land.
Historical visits included the archaeological sites of Knossos and Phaestos, where they learned about Crete's ancient past. Father Waltner's leadership and personal attention ensured the journey left a lasting impression on all who took part. Throughout the trip, the group shared meals, conversations, and reflections, strengthening their bonds.
The pilgrimage combined spiritual reflection with cultural discovery. Participants returned with memories of shared experiences, from worship in olive groves to walks through ancient ruins. The trip's success was noted by many, with Father Waltner's guidance playing a key role in its impact.
