Portugal’s hotels brace for near-full Christmas and New Year bookings

Portugal's hotel industry is gearing up for a bumper Christmas and New Year, with occupancy rates potentially hitting 95%. The season is expected to be a major success, driven by both domestic and international demand.

British and German tourists are leading the charge in Madeira and the Algarve, drawn by the regions' diverse landscapes, cultural attractions, and active holiday options. Madeira, in particular, is the most sought-after destination, with a 10% increase in reservations. The Algarve expects a growth of 5% to 7% in bookings. Meanwhile, Portuguese and Spanish travelers are driving bookings in Lisbon and Porto. However, Pestana Hotel Group reports a slight dip in Lisbon, despite strong demand in Porto. Hotel prices are also on the rise, with increases of up to 15%. Occupancy rates vary by region, ranging from 65% to 95%, with room rates also climbing.

The upcoming holiday season is shaping up to be a significant boost for Portugal's hotel industry. Despite a slight dip in Lisbon, overall demand is strong, particularly from international tourists in Madeira and the Algarve. The domestic market has also become more prominent this season, with more Portuguese choosing to celebrate in hotels and restaurants.
