Youth Hostels Are Trendy - Rhineland-Palatinate’s youth hostels boom after major renovations and aim for record stays

Youth hostels in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland have witnessed a significant surge in visitors. Last year, overnight stays skyrocketed by over 10,800, totaling nearly 982,000. This year, the region aims to hit the one-million mark for the first time.

The increase can be attributed to substantial renovations at several key locations. The Traben-Trarbach Youth Hostel has already reopened following a comprehensive overhaul. Another site, in Idar-Oberstein, will welcome guests again in April once its modernization work is complete.

The two recently refurbished hostels are driving this growth, contributing to a network of 40 youth hostels across the two states. Last year's rise in bookings indicates that travelers are responding positively to the improved facilities. With demand rising, operators anticipate surpassing one million overnight stays in 2024, a first for the region.

The reopening of the Idar-Oberstein hostel in April will complete the latest round of upgrades. Officials are confident that the modernized facilities will continue to attract more visitors. The target of one million overnight stays now appears within reach for the first time.
