Russian Riesling Stuns Judges to Win Israel's Top Wine Competition
A Russian wine has taken the top prize at this year's TERRAVINO International Tasting Competition in Israel. The Brut d'Or Riesling (2022) by Abrau-Durso scored 93.67 points, earning the Grand Champion award. This marks the first time a Russian entry has won the competition's highest honour.
TERRAVINO is an annual event held since 2006, organised by the Yaffo Wine Culture Center (Ish a-Anavim). The competition follows strict standards set by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), which has certified over 200 global wine contests since 1914. This year's edition drew 578 entries from 17 countries, with Russia sending the largest delegation—110 wines from 18 producers.
The Russian wines performed exceptionally well, collecting 42 awards in total. These included 11 Double Gold medals, 19 golds, and 11 silvers, making Russia the most decorated nation at the event. Israeli wineries also featured among the winners, with Somek Winery and Galai Winery receiving recognition.
A panel of international experts—winemakers, sommeliers, educators, and journalists—judged the entries. Their decision placed Abrau-Durso'sBrut d'Or Riesling above all others, securing its place as the competition's standout wine.
The victory highlights the growing reputation of Russian wines on the international stage. With 42 awards, Russia led this year's TERRAVINO, reinforcing its presence in global wine competitions. The OIV-backed event continues to serve as a key platform for winemakers worldwide.
