Russia's Far East Debuts a Unique Cultural Train Journey Through History
A new themed rail tour has launched in Russia's Far East, offering travellers a cultural journey through history. The Far Eastern Railway (DVZhD) introduced Blagoveshchensk: At the Crossroads of Cultures, a three-day premium train experience from Khabarovsk to Blagoveshchensk. No other region in Russia currently provides a similar train route focused on local heritage and traditions.
The tour runs from April to October, with seven scheduled departures. Passengers travel in comfort aboard a premium train, exploring Blagoveshchensk's rich past through guided excursions.
The itinerary begins with a city tour, showcasing historic sites like the first paved street, the oldest surviving house, and the stone church of the Annunciation. Visitors also take in panoramic views of the Chinese riverbank across the Amur River.
One highlight is the Kalachnaya Museum, where guests can try baking kalachi—traditional bread rolls—using a 14th-century recipe. Another stop is the Alexander Tikhomirov Memorial Workshop, honouring the renowned artist who revolutionised Russian window painting.
The Blagoveshchensk: At the Crossroads of Cultures tour provides a unique way to experience the region's history and traditions. With limited departures between April and October, the route stands out as the only themed rail journey of its kind in Russia. Passengers gain access to cultural workshops, guided tours, and scenic views along the way.
