Russia's March long weekend offers outdoor adventures and cultural escapes

Russians will enjoy an extended weekend in March as International Women's Day falls on a Friday. The holiday, celebrated on March 8, creates three consecutive days off from March 7 to 9. This break offers a chance to explore local attractions and outdoor activities across the region.

The only official public holiday in Russia this March is International Women's Day on March 8. As it lands on a Friday, workers will have a long weekend stretching from Thursday evening to Sunday night. No other federal or regional holidays are scheduled for the month, including Orthodox Easter or local observances.

During the break, outdoor enthusiasts can join guided cross-country ski tours through Petropavlovsky Forest on March 9. After the excursion, participants can unwind at a nearby tourist base offering wellness treatments. For those seeking a different adventure, Mount Pilakhta provides a moderate two-kilometre hike suitable for anyone aged 12 and older. Hikers must first obtain an informational pass from the Tourist Information Center to access the Matai Nature Reserve.

Other activities include visits to a women's monastery or ice fishing on a local lake. The extended weekend gives residents and visitors plenty of options to enjoy nature and cultural sites.

With three full days off, many will take advantage of the holiday to travel or relax. The mix of outdoor tours, wellness options, and cultural visits provides varied ways to spend the long weekend. The break also highlights the region's natural beauty and accessible hiking routes.
