Sabres Unveil Striking Black History Celebration Logo by Ghanaian Artist
The Buffalo Sabres have unveiled a special crest for their Black History Celebration game, designed by Ghanaian artist George Afedzi Hughes. The unique logo, inspired by the team's classic 'goathead' throwback, will feature on practice jerseys auctioned to support local arts and education programmes.
Hughes, who heads the painting department at the University at Buffalo, drew from his Ghanaian heritage to create the design. The crest incorporates Adinkra symbols—traditional Akan motifs—such as interlocked diamonds for justice, a black diamond for strength, and a comb representing grooming and care. A diamond-shaped pattern also symbolises strategic work, while a gold hexagon frames the logo, reflecting interconnectedness and Africa's natural wealth.
The background includes the red, black, and green of the Pan-African flag. Above the Buffalo head, divided gray arrows point in the same direction, signifying continuity through lineage and heritage. This marks the first time a Community Artist Series design has reimagined the Sabres' 'goathead' logo. The Sabres will wear the jerseys during their Black History Celebration game against Los Angeles on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026. The auction for the practice jerseys opens at 2 p.m. on Jan. 29 and closes at 9 p.m. on Feb. 8, with all proceeds benefiting the Buffalo Center for Arts and Technology. The organisation provides free workforce training for adults and afterschool programmes for youth in the Buffalo area.
The auction will directly fund community initiatives through the Buffalo Center for Arts and Technology. Hughes' design, blending cultural symbolism with the Sabres' history, will remain a highlight of the team's Black History Celebration. The jerseys will be available to bid on from late January to early February.
