Seville overhauls transport for Semana Santa's massive crowds
Seville is preparing for Semana Santa with major changes to transport and traffic. The city council has announced adjustments to bus routes, schedules, and loading zones to accommodate the influx of visitors. These measures aim to ease congestion during one of the busiest weeks of the year.
Starting Monday, March 24, bus services will begin earlier than usual. Buses will run from 6:00 AM on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of Holy Week, shifting to 7:00 AM for the rest of the week. Tussam is also boosting capacity by 20% compared to a normal week and by 2% over last year's figures.
Several routes will see temporary changes. Lines operating along Ponce de León will divert to Puerta Osario from 2:00 PM on Palm Sunday until Holy Saturday. Routes 40 and 43 will halt afternoon services from 2:00 PM and will not run at all on Good Friday. Meanwhile, the Metrocentro line will end at Archivo de Indias, with the last departure around 1:30 AM each night—except for the late-night service between Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
Other adjustments include new termini for routes 13 and 14, which will now end at Alameda de Hércules from March 24. A designated loading and unloading zone has been set up in Plaza del Duque de la Victoria. Electric mopeds will have extended loading hours from the Friday of Sorrows through Maundy Thursday, excluding Palm Sunday. Additionally, La Campana will close completely from 10:00 AM on Tuesday, March 24, for the duration of Holy Week.
The changes come as Seville expects 57 processional brotherhoods to march through the streets during Semana Santa. Key events like La Madrugá, featuring El Silencio, Jesús del Gran Poder, Macarena, and El Cachorro, will draw large crowds. The city's transport adjustments are designed to support both residents and visitors during this busy period.
