Reduced Scope at Achava Festival - Smaller Event at Achava Festival Occurring
The Achava Festival, a significant cultural event in Thuringia with a Jewish influence, is set to return from the 6th to the 21st of September 2023. This year, the festival will take place at 16 locations across the region, with the former radio broadcasting hall in Weimar serving as a new venue.
The word "Achava" means "brotherhood" in Hebrew, and the festival's key focus remains on engaging with the history and culture of Jewish life in Thuringia. This year, the festival program includes exhibitions, concerts, films, panel discussions, interreligious encounters, and Stolperstein events, all aimed at fostering understanding and remembrance.
One of the highlights of the opening concerts will be the performances of Thomas Quasthoff at the former radio broadcasting hall on the 6th and 7th of September. The hall, previously used by MDR Thuringia, has been added as a new venue for the festival.
However, this year's festival will see a reduction in its budget, with the state contributing 70,000 euros less than last year, totaling 200,000 euros. Festival manager Martin Kranz stated that the program reduction is due to the smaller budget. The budget for this year stands at 320,000 euros, down from around 400,000 euros in previous years.
Despite the budget cuts, the festival's educational offerings remain a significant part of the program. This year, an art workshop in Mühlhausen will see students working on sound sculptures as part of memory culture.
The Achava Festival is one of the many events held in Thuringia, including the Yiddish Summer Weimar and the Jewish-Israeli Cultural Days. The festival is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region and serves as a platform for dialogue, education, and remembrance.
