Exploring Geneva Beyond the Watches and Wonders Exhibition

Geneva, renowned for its prestigious watch exhibition, offers a rich array of cultural attractions and dining experiences that extend far beyond the show space.

Cultural Attractions in Geneva

The historic heart of Geneva, the Old Town (Vieille Ville), is filled with narrow medieval streets, charming squares such as Place du Bourg-de-Four, and centuries-old buildings including the Cathédrale St. Pierre. Visitors can climb its tower for panoramic city views. The Old Town also hosts museums like the Maison Tavel (the oldest house documenting Geneva’s history) and the Musée International de la Réforme, exploring the Reformation’s impact in the region.

Geneva’s leading museums include the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire with Renaissance paintings and ancient artifacts, the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain, the Musée des Arts d’Extrême Orient for Far Eastern items, and the Musée Ariana for pottery and ceramics. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum vividly tells the story of humanitarian efforts worldwide.

Iconic landmarks such as the Jet d’Eau fountain on Lake Geneva, shooting water 140 meters high, and the United Nations European Headquarters offer insight into Geneva’s global diplomatic role. The English Garden (Jardin Anglais) features the famous Flower Clock, a floral tribute to Switzerland’s watchmaking heritage.

Other historic sites include the Old Arsenal in the Old Town, showcasing cannons from Geneva’s military past, and the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) highlighting Renaissance architecture and a history of significant diplomatic events like the Geneva Conventions.

Dining Experiences in Geneva

Geneva’s Old Town and lakeside areas feature numerous cozy cafés and restaurants, particularly around Place du Bourg-de-Four, where locals and tourists enjoy Swiss café culture in an atmospheric setting. Seasonal culinary treats such as raclette, mulled wine, and lobster rolls are popular during festive times like Christmas markets (Noël aux Bastions), supporting local producers and artisans.

The lakeside cafés near Jet d’Eau offer relaxing spots to enjoy Swiss and international cuisine while admiring views of Lake Geneva and the French Alps.

Recommended Restaurants

Bombar, a fashionable bar-bistro located at Place des Augustins 3, 1205 Geneve, is inspired by Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks painting. The interior features roughly cast concrete columns, op-art floor tiles, exposed, load-bearing walls, a corrugated iron and stainless steel bar, and a more cheerful atmosphere than Hopper's painting. Chef Victor Freiburghaus, previously from the three Michelin-starred Epicure at Paris' Le Bristol hotel, recommends the 12 hours-cooked, shredded pork shoulder and the roasted butternut squash with tahini, zaatar, and lightly toasted pine nuts on the side. It is advised to book a table for dinner at Bombar in advance.

Roberto, an Italian restaurant established in 1945, is Geneva's best and buzziest Italian restaurant, serving traditional Italian dishes.

Chocolate Lovers' Paradise

Auer, on the super-smart Rue De Rive, is a popular destination for high-cacao-content chocolate lovers in Geneva.

Shopping in Geneva

The Plaine de Plainpalais flea market, located at geneve.com/en/companies/plaine-de-plainpalais, is recommended for shopping in Geneva.

Relaxation and Recreation

Bains des Pâquis, located at Quai du Mont-Blanc 30, 1201 Geneva, is a popular spot for morning plunges, night swims, yoga sessions, and full-moon saunas, and offers fondue au crémant (fondue made with sparkling wine) from a cute little refreshment stall.

For a more extended stay, our website recommends a two-night stay at the old-school Hôtel Longmalle or Hôtel de la Cigogne. After exploring the show, guests can walk back to the airport and catch an evening plane home.
