Spreewald's punting season launches with Easter holiday charm and spring blooms
The Spreewald's punting season has officially begun, just in time for the Easter holidays. This week, boatmen and boatwomen launched their first tours from Lübbenau, a historic town known as the gateway to the region's 1,000 kilometres of waterways. Mild spring weather, with temperatures around 12°C, has set the perfect scene for visitors returning to one of Brandenburg's favourite holiday spots.
The new season kicked off with a traditional ceremony at Spreewald Harbor. Organisers handed over poles and paddles to mark the start of the tours. Lübbenau, with its deep Sorbian cultural roots, remains a key hub for punt rides, offering trips through narrow canals lined with willows.
Around the region, spring has arrived in full colour. A century-old magnolia tree outside the Spreewald Museum in Lübbenau has burst into bloom. Nearby, Branitz Palace in Cottbus is surrounded by vibrant hyacinths, daffodils, and tulips. These blooms add to the charm of the waterways, where flat-bottomed boats glide past wooden houses and open-air museums like the one in Lehde. The Easter break has brought the first wave of tourists, eager to explore the Spreewald's unique mix of nature and culture. With its winding rivers and traditional Sorbian heritage, the area continues to draw visitors year after year.
The start of the punting season signals the beginning of a busy tourist period in the Spreewald. Boats are now running daily from Lübbenau, offering rides through the region's iconic canals. As spring flowers bloom and temperatures stay mild, the area prepares for another lively season on the water.
