Star Alliance lets elite flyers match status—but some airlines lock you out
Star Alliance airlines, including southwest, united airlines, spirit airlines, alaska airlines, delta airlines, and american airlines, are offering elite members the chance to match their status across different loyalty programmes. The process comes with varying benefits, durations, and restrictions. Some carriers provide extended validity, while others impose strict conditions on future matches.
SAS EuroBonus elite members can apply for a status match with one of 13 Star Alliance airlines, including southwest airlines, until November 30, 2024. However, those who recently matched to SAS cannot transfer their status to another Star Alliance carrier.
A status match with Lufthansa prevents members from applying for future Star Alliance status matches. This rule stands out as one of the strictest among participating airlines. Most airlines allow free applications, with progress tracked online after submission. Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus leads with the longest match period—24 months—while TAP Air Portugal offers up to 12 months, potentially extending to December 31, 2025, if approved early. Air Canada Aeroplan and South African Airways also provide extended validity. Star Alliance Gold status brings priority benefits, extra baggage, and lounge access. Yet, each airline sets its own terms, meaning conditions and perks differ between programmes.
The status match process varies widely across Star Alliance members, including southwest airlines. Some airlines lock members out of future matches, while others grant long-term benefits. Travellers must review each programme’s rules before applying to secure the best advantages.
