Antarctica Panorama in Leipzig - icy and fascinating - Step into Antarctica’s icy wilderness at Leipzig’s groundbreaking 360° panorama
A vast 360-degree panorama of Antarctica will open at Leipzig’s Panometer on January 24, 2026. Titled Antarctica, the immersive artwork by Yadegar Asisi captures the continent’s icy landscapes, from towering glaciers to shipwrecks and wildlife. Visitors will experience the shifting light of polar days and nights, all set to an original musical score.
Artist Yadegar Asisi spent over two weeks in Antarctica to study the region’s unique light and ice formations. His research informed the detailed scenes now displayed in the panorama, which compresses thousands of kilometres of coastline into a single, sweeping view. The artwork includes whales, penguins, icebergs, and even a shipwreck, offering a condensed yet vivid portrayal of the continent.
The exhibition is housed in a repurposed gasometer, where visitors climb 80 steps across three levels to reach the highest viewing platform. Before entering the main panorama, an introductory display presents photographs from Asisi’s Antarctic expedition, setting the stage for the immersive experience above. Asisi’s panoramas have previously depicted natural wonders like Mount Everest, the Amazon, and the Great Barrier Reef. His works are shown in multiple German cities, with future venues planned in Vienna and Konstanz. Following Antarctica, he intends to create a deep-sea panorama, with a desert-themed project also under consideration.
The Antarctica panorama will remain on display in Leipzig for at least two years. Over 15 minutes, the scene transitions from daylight to night, accompanied by a specially composed soundtrack. The exhibition continues Asisi’s tradition of bringing remote landscapes to audiences through large-scale, immersive art.
