Stranded Ferry Carrying 142 Passengers Halted in Rügen Islands

Hop on board a tale of an unplanned ocean adventure! The passengers of a ferry journeying between Hiddensee and Rügen, two picturesque Baltic Sea isles, found themselves in a pickle when their boat hit some rough seas — literally. This unexpected stopover, brought about by a pesky technical glitch, left them stranded for an extended seafaring soiree.

A ferry, jam-packed with close to 150 travelers and crew, found itself stuck between the Baltic waves on its route from Vitte on Hiddensee to Schaprode on Rügen. The German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) revealed that all passengers remained unscathed, as the ocean's waters were serene that day.

However, the ferry's idyllic journey was extended by a good three hours. Turns out, the sea's gently lapping waves concealed a hidden obstacle, as the vessel's voyage took a detour into shallow waters due to a snag in its rudder system.

Traveling the Wonders of Rügen

Navigating the Schaproder Bodden — a tranquil lagoon nestled between the two Mecklenburg-Vorpommern islands — was the unfortunate ferry's destination.

The root of the problem

A broken relay in the rudder system seemed to be the culprit, causing the ferry to stray off course, as revealed by the shipping company's spokesperson to NDR. This devilish detour left the 40-meter-long vessel listing among the shallows.

The initial rescue boat aimed to haul the errant vessel back to its rightful path, but the task proved too mighty. Only a beefier boat managed to secure and tow the beleaguered ferry back into deeper waters. Once freed, the vessel continued its journey under its own power to Schaprode.
