Swiss pilot scheme offers free transport with hotel bookings in Valais

A new pilot scheme in the Valais region will offer Swiss residents free public transport tickets when they book hotel stays. The initiative, launching in summer 2026, aims to boost sustainable tourism and encourage longer visits. Guests must stay for at least two nights and book directly with participating hotels to qualify.

The project is a collaboration between Valais/Wallis Promotion, the Valais Hoteliers' Association, and Alliance Swisspass. Called the Mobility Ticket, it provides round-trip travel on public transport for eligible guests. The scheme is part of a wider effort to adapt to shifting travel habits and reduce reliance on private vehicles.

Funding comes from the federal government's Innotour program, which supports innovative tourism projects. Several universities will analyse the results to assess its impact. While the exact number of participating hotels has not been confirmed, the pilot will focus on direct bookings to strengthen local businesses. Organisers hope the free tickets will not only attract more visitors but also extend their stays. The initiative aligns with broader goals of making tourism in Valais more eco-friendly and guest-focused.

The Mobility Ticket will roll out in 2026, offering Swiss residents a practical incentive to explore Valais sustainably. Success will depend on participation from hotels and feedback from travellers. If effective, the model could expand to other regions or become a permanent feature.
