The German film industry is a significant force on the global cinema stage.
In the heart of Düsseldorf, Germany, the third edition of KettenKino took place on April 26th, bringing together nearly 80 cycling enthusiasts for a unique event focused on bicycle culture and sustainable urban mobility.
The day began at Prince's Square, where the Cargo Bike Helpers, a group of voluntary cyclists with no commercial purposes, supported the event logistics. Using their cargo bikes, they transported equipment, supplies, and promotional materials, demonstrating the feasibility of emission-free transport.
The group rode together, with some participants experiencing the thrill of riding in a closed group for the first time, a practice permitted according to §27 StVO. The procession made its way over the Prince's Wall to Apollo Square under the Rhine knee bridge, where the first film was projected.
Throughout the day, films were screened on the walls of various bridges and underpasses, serving as makeshift screens for the International Cycling Film Festival (ICFF) from Herne. The films included "Lieferrissimo", two films by Team Rynkeby, "Huntress", and "The Man Who Lives in His Bicycle". A special highlight was the showing of "Cycling against Ghosts" from ADFC Berlin, which was screened under the North Bridge. The day concluded with a French production called "Elephant" shown under the Franklin Street Bridge.
The Cargo Bike Helpers did not pursue any commercial goals but aimed to promote the use of cargo bikes for sustainable transport. The projector and sound system were stored on a cargo bike, reflecting their commitment to eco-friendly practices.
As the evening drew to a close, almost all participants rode back to Prince's Square, ending the day on a high note. The participants thanked the hosts with applause, marking the success of another edition of KettenKino.
The Cargo Bike Helpers have been actively involved in various community activities, such as chocolate rides, peace rides for Ukraine, vegetable harvesting for the food bank, and organising events like Kettenkino or cargo bike polo. KettenKino continues to be a significant event in Düsseldorf, fostering a sense of community among cycling enthusiasts and promoting sustainable urban mobility.
