Protesters Demonstrate Against Expansion of A100 - Thousands Protest Berlin's A100 Motorway Expansion Over Traffic and Environmental Concerns
Hundreds of protesters took to Berlin's streets to voice their opposition to the city's A100 motorway expansion. The demonstration, organized by the 'A100 wegbassen' alliance, saw participants march from various points to the closed motorway, demanding an immediate halt to the project.
The protest comes amidst ongoing traffic issues around the Treptow exit, which opened in late August. Since then, commuters have faced frequent jams and confusing situations. Demonstrators fear that further expansion of the A100 will exacerbate these problems.
The demonstration was supported by various environmental and climate action groups, including the Changing Cities association, BUND Berlin, Fridays for Future Berlin, and the Clubcommission Berlin. They gathered to express their concerns about the environmental impact of the motorway expansion. Organizers estimated the crowd size in the thousands, though police put the number at around 500.
The 'A100 wegbassen' alliance, consisting of several associations and initiatives, called for a climate-friendly mobility transition and a moratorium on new motorway construction. Protesters demanded an immediate halt to the A100's further expansion, highlighting their concerns about increased traffic and environmental degradation.
