Tulsa Fights Rising STIs: Free Testing & Awareness for Gen Z
Tulsa County Health Department (THD) has launched a public health campaign to tackle rising sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates among young adults. The campaign, targeting Gen Z individuals aged 18-24, aims to promote awareness of prevention tactics, testing, and treatment. It comes as Oklahoma ranks high nationally for syphilis cases.
The campaign, led by THD, will offer confidential, low-cost testing and treatment programs at five clinics across the county. It follows a surge in STI cases, with 1,225 primary and secondary syphilis cases reported in 2021, costing Tulsa County an estimated $4.7 million annually. The goal is to reduce infection rates by encouraging preventative actions, even if it helps just a few percent of the population.
To engage the target demographic, the campaign will employ digital, social media, outdoor, and streaming audio advertisements in popular bar destinations and high-rate areas. It will use eye-catching graphics and Gen Z slang vocabulary, with Spanish advertisements to reach a wider audience.
The campaign, set to run in Tulsa County, seeks to combat rising STI rates by promoting awareness and preventative measures among young adults. With Oklahoma ranking high for syphilis cases, the initiative hopes to make a significant impact, even if it reaches a small percentage of the population.
