Astana, Kazakhstan — Silke and Kieran, a Scottish travel couple embarking on a 10-year, globe-trotting honeymoon, have found a hidden gem in Kazakhstan. Their journey through the Central Asian country has been marked by its diverse landscapes, vibrant cities, and unparalleled hospitality.

After spending three years exploring Southeast Asia, the couple felt the need for a change, seeking new destinations that would offer an opportunity to immerse themselves in cultures they had not yet encountered. Kazakhstan, with its lesser-known charm, seemed like the perfect fit. The timing was also ideal, as their travels coincided with the World Nomad Games, further consolidating their decision.

Central Asia's warm welcome

One of the most striking aspects of Central Asia, according to Silke and Kieran, was the extraordinary kindness and hospitality exhibited by the local people. They shared that during their time in Kazakhstan, they have found themselves frequently welcomed into the homes of strangers, either for a meal or overnight stay. This local connection to their roots and traditions has left a lasting impact on the travelers.

In Astana, the couple attended the fifth World Nomad Games and forged friendships with locals. One such friendship led to an unforgettable night with a kind police officer named Serik, who opened his home to Silke, Kieran, and their companions. A night of shared stories and cultural exchange left the couple with newly formed memories and a deeper understanding of Kazakhstan's hospitality.

Living the honeymoon dream in Kazakhstan

Silke and Kieran's Kazakhstan adventure began in Astana, where they found themselves pleasantly surprised by the modernity and warmth of the city. Their travels led them to the fifth World Nomad Games, during which they encountered Aisholpan Nurgaip, the world-renowned eagle huntress, and her family. They also had the opportunity to attend Altai Fest, an eagle hunting festival that was a highlight of their journey.

The couple also spent time with their friend Nazerke in her home in Almaty before venturing to her family's village in Kelintobe, Kyzylorda. In addition to these experiences, Silke and Kieran were particularly captivated by Kazakhstan's natural beauty, especially the Kiin Kerish valley and Zaisan Lake.

Their interactions with both city dwellers and rural residents, as well as the country's breathtaking landscapes, have left a lasting impression on the couple.

"Although there is so much more to discover in the west, we don't want to rush our time here... there is too much to do and see," shared Silke and Kieran, as they contemplated their next Kazakhstani adventure.
