United Airlines eases baggage rules for families and loyal flyers

United Airlines has updated its baggage policies, offering more flexibility for families and frequent flyers while maintaining competitive fees with other major U.S. carriers.

Parents travelling with young children can now bring a child safety seat on board free of charge, provided it meets FAA regulations and is suitable for the child's age and size. This addition aims to enhance comfort and safety for families.

United's carry-on allowance varies by fare class. Standard Economy passengers can bring one personal item and one standard carry-on bag free of charge, while Basic Economy passengers are limited to just one personal item. This is in line with most other major U.S. carriers.

Checked bag fees start at $35 for the first bag, with higher fees for additional bags. Prepaying online offers a $5 discount per bag. United allows one car seat and one stroller or folding wagon per child to be checked for free.

Carry-on bags must not exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 35 x 23 centimeters), with personal items slightly smaller at 17 x 10 x 9 inches (43 x 25 x 22 centimeters). Checked bags should weigh no more than 50 pounds (23 kilograms) for economy and premium economy fares, and 70 pounds (32 kilograms) for business, first, and Polaris classes, with maximum linear dimensions of 62 inches (158 centimeters).

Lap infants can bring additional items on board, such as a diaper bag, breast pump, or a government-approved child seat, in addition to the carry-on allowance. United MileagePlus Premier members and certain credit card holders may enjoy complimentary checked bags.

United Airlines' revised baggage policies provide more convenience for families and frequent flyers, with competitive fees and additional perks for members. The new rules aim to improve the travel experience for all passengers.
