UK Adventure Bucket List
1. Land's End to John O'Groats Marathon
Prepare for the ultimate UK adventure as you embark on a Land's End to John O'Groats overland journey! Whether you hit the road,cycle or hike, this epic trek showcases the best of England and Scotland.
With a total distance of 603 miles (970km) as the crow flies, the traditional route by car spans 874 miles (1,406km). Cyclists typically take between 10 and 14 Days, while hikers often spend two to three months traipsing over 1,200 miles (1,900km)! Customize your journey by making stops at the top destinations along the way, or even detour into Wales for more off-the-beaten-path delights!
2. Conquer the Highest Peaks of Britain
Adventure-seekers may feel the urge to conquer the highest peaks in every corner of the UK. While we're not renowned for our mountains, we do have our fair share of breath-taking peaks that are waiting to be conquered!
Lace up your hiking boots and dive headfirst into these four peaks:
- Scotland – Ben Nevis (1,345m tall)
- Wales – Snowdon (1,085m)
- England – Scafell Pike (978m) in the Lake District
- Northern Ireland – Sliabh Dónairt (Slieve Donard) (850m)
For the truly brave, attempt the National Three Peaks Challenge: scale the highest mountains of England, Scotland, and Wales within 24 hours. It's a grueling feat, but the bragging rights are well worth it!
3. Cycle from Sea to Sea
Channel your inner cyclist and set out on a breath-taking bike ride across the country! The Sea to Sea – also known as C2C – is one of Britain's most popular long-distance cycle routes.
Begin at the Irish Sea on the Cumbrian Coast and pedal your way to Tyneham on the North Sea, covering a total distance of 136 miles. This trail takes in the best of the Lake District, the challenging hills of the North Pennines, and the scenic railway paths of County Durham before reaching vibrant Newcastle.
4. Zip Line Across the Fastest Zip Line in the World
Wales seems to be the UK's adventure playground, so it's no wonder that it's home to the world's fastest zip line: Zip World Velocity 2. You'll find this thrilling contraption in Penrhyn Slate Quarry, where it zips riders across the lake at speeds of over 160kph.
5. Try Coasteering on the Jurassic Coast
Coasteering is a top-notch adventure activity in the UK, and I'd highly recommend giving it a try on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. This breathtaking region boasts amazing geology and 180 million years of history, allowing you to discover the coastline in a thrilling and unique way.
Slip on your wetsuit and experience the Jurassic Coast from a whole new angle! Climb rocky cliffs, scramble up enormous boulders, dive through hidden caves, and leap into the water from exhilarating heights.
6. Road Trip the Cambrian Way in Wales
The Cambrian Way in Wales is easily one of my favourite road trips in the UK. Start your journey in the lively city of Cardiff andmake your way north along the scenic A470. If you wish, you can choose to stick to this main road throughout your entire trip, but there are plenty of detours that lead to magnificent mountain roads and scenic stops.
Some highlights of this route include the stunning mountain scenery of the Brecon Beacons National Park, the lake-studded valleys of mid-Wales, and the rugged landscapes of Snowdonia National Park. From hiking, watersports, and rock climbing,there's no shortage of adventures to be found along this winding route.
7. North Coast 500 in Scotland
Possibly the most epic route in the UK, the North Coast 500 is an unmissable road trip or long-distance bike ride. Beginning in the historic city of Inverness, this 516 mile (830km) route takes you to Scotland's remote reaches. Prepare for breathtaking beaches, towering mountain peaks, significant castles, and awe-inspiring landscapes.
Brave the highest ascent in the UK – Bealach na Bà – a challenging yet unforgettable road. For added excitement, try your hand at white-water rafting, surfing, kayaking, or "Munro bagging" - climbing one of the 282 Scottish hills that reach over 3,000 feet (914m) high.
8. Abseil the Avon Gorge
A few years back, I took on the challenge of abseiling the Avon Gorge near Bristol, and let me tell you – it was an unbelievable experience! Abseiling is an exhilarating activity you can try all over the UK, with popular spots like Dartmoor, Peak District, Snowdonia, and Cairngorms boasting great locations for this heart-pounding sport.
Southwest England's 200-foot-high rock face of the Avon Gorge offers a truly incredible adventure, pushing your limits and filling you with adrenaline as you conquer this massive wall. For another challenge, take on the highest freefall abseil at ArcelorMittal Orbit in London.
9. Surf in Cornwall
Cornwall is a global hotspot for surfing, with its extensive coastline, stunning bays, and exceptional breaks attracting surfers of all levels. If you're feeling adventurous this year, consider taking an "introduction to surfing" class in Newquay (starting at £50) or even immerse yourself in a surf retreat. 10. Snorkel with Seals
Did you know that the UK is home to around 38% of the world's population of grey seals? Get up close and personal with these playful creatures by joining a guided seal snorkelling tour. Find these amazing encounters in locations such as Lundy Island in Devon, the Scilly Isles off the coast of Cornwall, the Farne Islands near Northumberland, or around the Isle of Mull on the west coast of Scotland.
11. Road Trip the Causeway Coast
The Causeway Coast route in Northern Ireland offers one of the most incredible road trips in the UK. Begin in the vibrant city of Belfast and make your way to Londonderry (aka Derry), experiencing 200 miles of incredible coastal scenery, ruined castles, charming fishing villages, and abundant Irish history.
Highlights on your route include the iconic Giant's Causeway, whisky tastings at Bushmills distillery, and exploring the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge – a 30-meter-tall rope bridge linking the tiny island of Carrickarede to the mainland.
