The Weser Cycle Route is a captivating journey that takes you through the heart of Northern Germany, showcasing a blend of river landscapes, historic towns, and maritime culture. This 500-kilometer route, stretching from Hann. Münden to Bremerhaven, offers an unforgettable experience for cyclists interested in shipping infrastructure, river navigation, and Northern Germany’s maritime history.

Starting Off in Hann. Münden

Your adventure begins in Hann. Münden, a town renowned for its half-timbered houses and the confluence of the Fulda and Werra rivers, forming the Weser. As you set off, you'll be greeted by the lively area of Minden, where around 10,000 ships transit annually between the Weser and Mittelland Canal.

Historic Towns and Locks

As you progress downstream, you'll encounter several historic river harbors essential for shipping on the Weser, including those near Nienburg and Verden. The route includes passing through seven locks, managing the water levels and navigation on the Weser River, vital infrastructure supporting maritime traffic. One such lock, Beverungen, features prominently along the way.

Bremerhaven: The Maritime Hub

The journey concludes in Bremerhaven, a city known for its significant harbor and maritime museums. Bremerhaven highlights the maritime heritage of the Weser estuary with docks, shipping facilities, and museums dedicated to seafaring and shipping technology. Notable attractions include the Climate House, the Emigration Museum, and the Shipping Museum. Bremerhaven is also left in awe with the sight of the largest container ships in the world, over 400 meters long and carrying up to 22,000 containers.

Cycling Through Marshy Landscapes

The cycling route continues towards the North Sea, passing through a marshy landscape heavily influenced by the sea. Along the way, you'll find the peninsula of Butjadingen or the Cuxland, where the conclusion of the unique cycling tour marks the end of your adventure.
