Werder (Havel) Cherry Blossom Festival Kicks Off This Weekend

Werder's 147th Cherry Blossom Festival blends tradition with lively celebrations

Werder (Havel) (dpa/bb) — As fruit trees burst into bloom, one of Brandenburg's largest celebrations begins: the Cherry Blossom Festival in Werder (Havel). This Saturday marks the 147th edition of the beloved tradition. What can visitors expect?

Where Should I Go?

The festival is essentially three events in one, with some overlap. The traditional heart of the celebration takes place in the courtyards and gardens of local homes, where homemade fruit wine is poured and cake and bratwurst are served. Organizers emphasize the joy of savoring nature—picture straw bales under blooming orchards. Since the venues are spread out, shuttle buses are available for guests.

For livelier entertainment, the fairground and folk festival offer rides and attractions (starting April 29) and a packed stage program during the final weekend. Confirmed acts include DJ Tomekk and pop singer Sebastian Hämer, known for his hit "Summer of Our Lives."

What Are the Highlights?

The grand parade on May 2 is a perennial favorite, featuring dozens of dance troupes and an appearance by the Blossom Queen.

The Cherry Blossom Ball at Bismarck Heights traditionally opens the festival in style—though tickets run about €150 per person.

Visitors can also sample award-winning fruit wines in the gardens and courtyards. Each year, pre-festival tastings showcase everything from classic varieties to experimental blends.

How Do I Get There?

The RE1 regional train offers easy access from Berlin and Potsdam. The Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Authority (VBB) has announced extra services on event weekends and May 1, while Regiobus Potsdam-Mittelmark will expand bus routes to accommodate festivalgoers.

What Makes This Festival Special?

Most of the festivities unfold in Werder's picturesque streets, a town famed for its peninsula, natural beauty, and charming cottages. A popular day-trip destination for Berliners year-round, the area now dazzles with cherry, apple, and other fruit trees in full, fragrant bloom.
