The 2026 Happy City Index has ranked the world’s happiest urban centres, with Copenhagen taking the top spot. In Portugal, Maia led as the highest-ranked city, securing 69th place overall. The index assessed over 64 factors to determine quality of life in cities worldwide. The Institute for Quality of Life, based in the UK, published the latest rankings. Their assessment covered six key categories, including health, environment, and community well-being. Copenhagen emerged as the leading city globally.

Within Portugal, Maia stood out as the best-performing city at 69th. Odivelas followed as the highest-ranked in central-southern Portugal, landing at 114th. Other Portuguese entries included Matosinhos (111th), Almada (124th), and Lisbon (159th). Braga, Gondomar, and Funchal also appeared, placing 166th, 199th, and 225th respectively. Odivelas outperformed both Almada and Lisbon in the rankings. Its position highlighted its relative strength in the central-southern region of the country.
