Race for 2026 hiking permits begins with strict daily trail limits
February has become a key month for hikers hoping to explore some of America's most sought-after trails in 2026. Four major wilderness areas will open their permit lotteries over the next few weeks, each with strict daily limits. Securing a spot requires quick action, as competition for these scenic routes remains fierce.
The first opportunity arrives with Havasu Falls, Arizona, where permits went live on February 1, 2026. A three-night stay at the campground starts at $455 per person, with limited availability for the entire season.
The Subway, Utah lottery follows a similar schedule, accepting applications from February 1 to February 25, 2026. This year, 75% of time slots will be open for advance booking, leaving the rest for last-minute entries.
On February 15, 2026, two more lotteries open. The Enchantments in Washington will run an advanced lottery covering nearly the full 2026 season, but only 16 permits per day will be issued. The same day, the Core Enchantment Zone daily lottery begins, allowing up to 24 people per day—likely starting at 7am PST, based on past seasons.
Later, on March 1, 2026, Half Dome in California will launch its pre-season lottery. Once the trail opens for the year, a daily cap of 300 hikers will be enforced.
With strict quotas and high demand, hikers must act fast to secure permits for these iconic trails. Each location has its own application window, pricing, and daily limits. Missing the deadlines could mean waiting until next year for another chance.
