Harbour keeper fulfills Atlantic dream after stormy ARC rally crossing
Ramsey harbour keeper Tony Thompson has completed a lifelong dream by crossing the Atlantic. He sailed from Gran Canaria to St Lucia as part of a seven-person crew in the annual ARC rally. The three-week voyage brought both thrilling moments and tough challenges on the open sea.
The journey began with 142 yachts setting off from Gran Canaria. Thompson joined six strangers aboard a 45ft Jeanneau yacht, none of whom had met before the trip. Their adventure quickly tested their skills when a nighttime squall struck with force.
During the storm, Thompson was knocked overboard, triggering his life jacket to inflate. The crew managed to pull him back safely, though the experience left him shaken. Repairs were also needed after the mainsail tore in the rough conditions.
Supplies ran low at times, forcing the team to wash in seawater when fresh water dwindled. Yet, the voyage wasn't without rewards. The crew caught and cooked a two-metre marlin, providing a memorable meal during the crossing.
Despite the hardships, Thompson described the trip as a wonderful adventure. The three-week journey met all his expectations, fulfilling a long-held ambition.
Thompson's Atlantic crossing ended in St Lucia after 21 days at sea. The experience included survival tests, teamwork, and the satisfaction of achieving a personal milestone. His story now adds to the many tales from this year's ARC rally.
