Austria's Wachau Railway weaves through vineyards and Danube views
A scenic railway in Austria’s Wachau Valley offers travellers a picturesque journey through rolling vineyards and historic villages. The Wachau Railway, running since 1909, connects key stops like Krems and Weißenkirchen, where narrow lanes and blooming apricot trees greet visitors. The railway operates seasonally, carrying passengers above the Danube’s floodplains from spring to autumn. Trains depart Krems multiple times a day, with rides to Weißenkirchen taking just under 20 minutes. The route allows easy stops in charming villages along the way.
From Weißenkirchen, hikers can follow the 4-kilometre Panorama Trail to Achleiten. The walk takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes, winding past terraced vineyards and offering sweeping views of the Danube. The trail highlights the valley’s natural beauty and traditional architecture.
The Wachau Railway and Panorama Trail provide a relaxed way to explore the region’s landscapes and heritage. With frequent departures and well-marked paths, visitors can experience the valley’s vineyards, riverside villages, and seasonal blossoms at their own pace.
