British Airways flight attendant dies suddenly during Johannesburg layover

A British Airways flight attendant has died unexpectedly while on a layover in Johannesburg. Alan Foster, 50, was found lifeless in his hotel room on May 15, just hours after falling ill on arrival. The incident has left colleagues deeply affected and disrupted flight operations. Foster, a senior member of the cabin crew, travelled from London to Johannesburg as part of his regular duties. Shortly after landing, he became unwell and chose to skip dinner with colleagues, staying instead in his hotel room.

The next morning, staff grew concerned when Foster failed to answer calls or respond to attempts to reach him. Upon entering his room, they discovered he had passed away. The sudden loss left the crew so distressed that they were unable to operate the return flight to London as scheduled. Passengers faced a nearly six-hour delay while a replacement crew was arranged. The affected staff were flown back to London on a separate aircraft. British Airways provided psychological support to all employees upon their return.

The airline has not yet released details on the cause of Foster’s death. His passing has prompted an internal response, with counselling made available to staff. Flights have since resumed, though the incident has caused noticeable disruption to operations.
