German tourist wins €986 after sun lounger battle in Greek resort
A German tourist has won nearly €1,000 in damages after a court ruled in his favour over a dispute about sun loungers during a family holiday in Greece. The incident took place in 2024 on the island of Kos, where the man and his family struggled to find available poolside chairs despite waking up early each morning. The tourist, who booked a package tour costing €7,186, claimed that sun loungers were consistently occupied by towels left by other guests. Even after waking at 6 a.m., he often found no free chairs, forcing his children to sit on the floor by the pool.
Frustrated by the situation, he took legal action against the tour operator. He accused the company of failing to address the issue and not enforcing fair access to loungers. The court agreed, stating that the operator had a duty to maintain a reasonable ratio of sun loungers to guests. In the ruling, the judge confirmed that the family was entitled to €986.70 in compensation. The decision highlighted the operator’s responsibility to regulate lounger use for the tours it sold.
The court’s verdict sets a precedent for tour operators to manage sun lounger availability more effectively. The family will now receive the awarded damages, while the operator must review its policies to prevent similar disputes in future.
