Lockdown Side Hustle Becomes a Booming Campervan Business for Marcus Moffat

A lockdown hobby has turned into a thriving business for Marcus Moffat. His company, Wander Campervans, converts ordinary vans into bespoke campervans—and demand is soaring. Over April, every vehicle was fully booked, thanks to the Easter holiday rush. Moffat began converting vans during lockdown as a personal project. Now, it’s his full-time job. Each conversion takes around six weeks, with help from electricians, plumbers, and other tradespeople.

The business has grown enough for Moffat to hire his first employee. He also works with subcontractors to complete the fit-outs. So far, he has transformed four vans, each named with an 'H'—a nod to his parents’ honeymoon travels in a van called *Henry*. To keep costs down, Wander Campervans sources half its materials from Gumtree. The approach seems to be working, especially as road trips and camping remain popular. In 2022, nearly two-thirds of Australians took a holiday, with over half travelling during the Easter long weekend alone.

The surge in bookings reflects a broader trend of Australians choosing road trips and camping. Moffat’s business now meets that demand with custom-built campervans. With four vehicles already in service and growing interest, the company looks set to expand further.
