Kashi's spiritual revival draws record crowds after sweeping upgrades

Kashi, also known as Varanasi, has transformed into a major tourism destination under recent development projects. The city’s spiritual and cultural appeal has grown, attracting record numbers of visitors. Officials credit the changes to large-scale infrastructure upgrades and government initiatives. The Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor stands as one of the most significant projects in the city’s revival. Completed under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, it has expanded and modernised the temple area, making access smoother for devotees. In March 2023 alone, nearly 65 lakh people visited the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, breaking previous records.

Beyond the corridor, broader improvements have reshaped Kashi’s landscape. Ghats along the Ganga River now feature better lighting, cleaner surroundings, and enhanced connectivity. Cruise services on the river offer tourists a new way to explore the city’s heritage. Multi-level parking, smart city initiatives, and riverfront development have further strengthened Kashi’s appeal as a complete tourism hub.

The Yogi government has also focused on essential amenities in the temple area. Modern toilets, drinking water stations, and digital queue management ensure a more comfortable experience for visitors. Security upgrades and improved transport links, including wider roads, have made travel easier for pilgrims arriving from across India and abroad.

Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh highlighted the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in driving these changes. Their vision has not only boosted religious tourism but also revitalised the local economy. Hotels, guest houses, and shops have multiplied, creating jobs and raising incomes for residents. The surge in visitors reflects Kashi’s growing status as a well-connected and well-maintained pilgrimage centre. With ongoing projects like ropeway systems and further beautification, the city is set to attract even larger crowds. The economic and infrastructural gains from these efforts continue to benefit both tourists and local communities.
