Shymkent's Birlik Dastarkhany Festival Unites Communities Through Kazakh Traditions
Shymkent’s Central Park hosted a vibrant celebration for Kazakhstan’s Unity Day with the large-scale festival Birlik Dastarkhany. The event brought together residents, veterans, and local leaders, including Mayor Gabit Syzdykbekov. Traditional music, food, and games filled the day as communities united to honour cultural heritage and friendship. The festival grounds buzzed with activity, featuring an artisan fair, a marketplace of national dishes, and installations depicting traditional Kazakh life. Inside decorated yurts, guests experienced the warmth of Kazakh hospitality while learning the secrets of national cuisine. Demonstrations included the making of baursaks, kurt, and hand-cut noodles, giving visitors a hands-on taste of culinary traditions.
At the heart of the event was a cooking competition where representatives from different ethnic groups prepared Kazakh specialties in eight large cauldrons. Dishes like kazy-karta, zhal-jaya, and freshly fried baursaks were judged on cooking techniques, meat and dough preparation, and the art of setting a traditional dastarkhan. Meanwhile, visitors joined in traditional games such as asyk atu and lyanga, adding to the festive atmosphere. The day concluded with a concert of patriotic songs, reinforcing the festival’s mission to strengthen social harmony and interethnic peace. The event highlighted the region’s rich cultural diversity while fostering connections among its people.
