Abkhazia tightens child entry rules but stays a budget travel gem

Abkhazia is set to introduce stricter entry rules for young travellers from January 20, 2026. Children under 14 will need their own international passport to cross the border. Meanwhile, the region remains one of the cheapest summer destinations in the Caucasus for budget-conscious holidaymakers. Currently, adult visitors only require a domestic Russian passport to enter Abkhazia. The new regulation, however, will require parents to obtain separate passports for their children before travelling.

Getting there can be affordable but time-consuming. A direct train from Moscow takes around 39 hours and costs from 7,000 rubles. A quicker alternative involves flying to Adler, walking to the border checkpoint, then taking a minibus to Gagra for just 500 rubles.

Once inside, accommodation options vary. Private rooms range from 3,000 to 5,000 rubles per night, while a 3-star hotel costs between 6,000 and 9,000 rubles. Meals are also reasonably priced, with lunch averaging 500–1,000 rubles. However, street food near beaches carries a higher risk of food poisoning.

Popular attractions include Pitsunda, known for its fine pebble beaches, and Lake Ritsa, where excursions start at 1,000 rubles. For those seeking alternatives, nearby Batumi in Georgia offers a longer summer season but at a higher cost than Sochi. The upcoming passport rule for children marks a key change for families planning trips to Abkhazia. Despite this, the region continues to offer low-cost travel, lodging, and activities. With careful planning, visitors can still enjoy a budget-friendly holiday in the Caucasus.
