Japan Tops the List as Solo Travel Surges Among Americans in 2024
Solo travel is growing fast among Americans, with a 33% rise in the past year alone. New data shows where they’re heading most—from bustling cities to scenic retreats. Japan leads the list as the top destination for those exploring alone. Japan attracts nearly 28,000 annual Google searches from American solo travellers. Its reputation for safety and a welcoming culture makes it a favourite, especially for first-timers. Thailand follows closely, with over 21,000 searches, while Costa Rica ranks third at 9,600.
Europe dominates half of the top 10 spots. Iceland leads the continent with just under 10,000 searches. Portugal, Italy, Ireland, and Spain also draw many solo visitors. The region’s cultural variety and easy transport networks add to its appeal. The trend shows no signs of slowing. Experts predict 2026 could be the busiest year yet for solo adventures.
More Americans than ever are choosing to travel alone, with Japan, Thailand, and Costa Rica topping the list. Europe’s mix of accessibility and culture keeps it a strong contender. As interest grows, destinations are preparing for even higher numbers in the coming years.
