Meet The Papermaker: A Lifetime of Craft, Culture and Civic Pride Honored
Ingo Schütze, widely known as The Papermaker, has received his city’s honorary pin for years of dedication to local traditions and community work. His contributions span crafts, cultural events, and politics—from hand papermaking to co-founding a carnival group and serving on the city council. Schütze began sharing the art of hand papermaking over 13 years ago. With his father, he acquired an antique paper press to demonstrate the craft at markets and events. Together, they taught both children and adults how sheets of paper were traditionally made. However, in 2025, he stepped back from public demonstrations after his father fell ill and could no longer assist.
Beyond papermaking, Schütze has long been active in cultural and civic life. In 2015, he co-founded *Vita Historica*, a medieval reenactment group that brings history to life at local fairs. A year later, he helped establish the carnival association *De Schinghellije*, where he now serves as deputy chair. His role includes organising themed parade floats and managing events for the group. Schütze’s involvement in local politics stretches back even further. He first served as a citizen representative from 2004 to 2005. Then, in November 2025, he joined the city council as a member of the SPD faction. His political focus remains on social policy, aiming to take responsibility for community welfare.
The honorary pin recognises Schütze’s wide-ranging efforts, from preserving traditional crafts to shaping local festivals and policy. His work continues to influence cultural heritage, civic engagement, and public service in the region.
